The Barons kicked off a doubleheader against the Blue Mountain University Toppers on February 28, 2025, at Blue Mountain, Miss. The Barons dropped game one 13-56 but rallied thanks to an incredible outing from Brandon Russell to take game two 3-0. These games bring the Barons' season record to 9-6. The Barons look to take the series on Saturday. Game one: Starting pitcher Grant Cochran took the mound for Brewton-Parker on what proved to be a tough outing. The game remained competitive, especially after a rally in the fifth inning where the Barons scored three runs, hinting at a potential comeback. Unfortunately, the Barons were unable to complete the comeback. Offensively, Brewton-Parker's players showed grit. Marquette Gibson scored two runs, while Kennard Dawson, Jeremi Lara, and Jordan Rahn each added runs to the team's total. Jeremi Lara, Jack Morris, and Fred Diaz were crucial in driving in runs, with Morris notably securing two singles along with his 2 RBI, boosting the team's scoring opportunities. Game two saw the Barons rally, led by Brandon Russell's masterful pitching. Russell dominated the mound for eight innings, striking out nine batters and allowing only two hits without conceding a run, securing the win. Carlos Rodriguez entered the game in the ninth to secure the save for the Barons. Their performance was crucial in maintaining the Barons' lead and momentum throughout the game. Offensively, the Barons were spearheaded by Carson Kirby, Marquette Gibson, and Michael Son, each of whom scored a run. Notable plays included Kirby's double to right center, followed by Gibson's double that brought Kirby home. Jeremi Lara also contributed significantly with a double that drove Gibson across the plate, completing the scoring drives during the fourth inning. Head Coach Aaron Larsen praised the team's resilience and improvement, stating, "Got off to a rocky start in game one, but the team really responded well in game two. It was great to see B Russ (Brandon Russell) have a solid outing after struggling to start the year. He was fantastic on the bump. We have a chance to take the series tomorrow, and that's what we'll focus on." The game witnessed excellent execution, setting the tone for the next encounter against Blue Mountain on March 1, 2025, at the same location. The Barons aim to carry this momentum into the upcoming game, striving to claim the series while continuing their impressive form in the season.
