Brewton-Parker Barons Dominate at Home in Track and Field Invitational
In a stellar display of athleticism and teamwork, the Brewton-Parker Barons triumphed in their home invitational on December 7, 2024, securing the top spot among competing teams. The event, held at Brewton-Parker, saw a chilly morning transform into a hotbed of record-breaking performances and championship-level competition.
The Barons outperformed Columbia International University and Thomas University with an impressive score of 330, leaving CIU in second place with 197 points and Thomas University with 79 points. The standout performances included Jonathan Williams, who set a school record in the 200m dash with a time of 22.12. Sidni Daniel matched this achievement in the women's 200m, clocking in at 25.92, while Kendra Payne broke the school record in the 400m with a lightning-fast 58.22.
In the field events, Hollis Morton leaped to national qualifiers as he delivered an A-level performance in the High Jump, setting a new school benchmark of 2.08 meters. Additionally, Donta Williams refreshed the school's records in the Long Jump with a leap of 6.58 meters.
The early victories by the Barons' top-notch throwers and jumpers were pivotal, creating a robust lead that energized the team. Hollis Morton's qualification for Nationals was a highlight, further boosting the team's morale. Coach Tony Hawkins reflected on the event’s success and the trajectory of his team, stating, "Pride is one of our 'Winquriments,' and we showed that Saturday at our home opener. Numerous personal bests, new school records, and a national-quality performance in the high jump by Hollis Morton. I know the program is moving in the right direction. Thank you to all the teams that participated and all our family, friends, and supporters that were in attendance."
Looking ahead, the Barons will carry their winning momentum into the Jimmy Carnes Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, scheduled for January 16, 2025. Their continued dedication and community support set the stage for what promises to be another exciting competition.
