Brown Men’s Rugby never gave up the lead and found its decisive burst late, beating Corinthians RFC 33-12 on Friday, March 27th, in Galway, Ireland. In a tough, physical match that stayed tense through the middle stages, the team put it away with two quick second-half tries, including a dazzling long-range finish from Captain Tito Edjua ’27 and a close-range score from Owen Clarke ’26.
Brown set the tone early. At 7:30 of the first half, wing Craig Michalowski ’26 finished in the corner to cap a multi-phase team try, and Edjua added the conversion for a 7-0 lead. The second try was the standout of the half. At 16:45, Inigo Langford ’29 weaved through the Corinthians defense from 30 meters out for a highlight-reel score, and Edjua converted again to push the advantage to 14-0. Corinthians answered at 28:00 on a quick penalty tap-and-go, trimming the margin, but Brown had already shown the shape of the day, patient attacking phases, clinical finishing, and physicality in the contact area.
That edge mattered because Corinthians kept applying pressure. Brown’s defence produced several tough stands with Corinthians threatening deep in Brown territory, preserving the lead when the match could have swung. The team’s forwards then delivered an important answer in the second half. At 36:30, Matt Schwab G’26 scored on a powerful carry off an eight-man pick from the back of a 5-meter attacking scrum. Edjua converted, giving Brown breathing room at 21-5.
Corinthians were not finished. They scored out wide from a lineout at 44:00, and for a stretch the match remained close in both tone and territory. Then came the sequence that settled it. At 46:30, Edjua turned a counterattack into seven points the hard way, racing more than 50 meters after an assist from Michalowski for an eye-popping try. The conversion was missed, but the spark was unmistakable. Just a few minutes later, at 51:00, Clarke broke a tackle and finished from close range, with Edjua converting to extend the margin to its final 33-12.
Edjua’s all-around influence was central to the result. He converted four tries and added one of his own, while Michalowski and Langford supplied two of Brown’s biggest first-half moments. Schwab’s scrum finish gave the pack a deserved reward, and Clarke’s late try closed the door. Brown scored early, absorbed the pressure that came back its way, and then finished with authority, the kind of road performance that travels well on any tour.
After a spectacular tour of Ireland, the Bears return to Providence to prepare to host a 7s tournament on Saturday, April 4th, and look to build upon the momentum of a strong runner-up finish at the Monumental 7s tournament.
