Brown Men’s Rugby Reaches Monumental 7s Final Behind Edjua’s 48-Point Outing

QUINCY, Mass. — Brown Men’s Rugby powered through pool play and the knockout rounds at the Monumental 7s Tournament on Saturday, March 14th, dominantly winning four straight matches before falling 19-17 to back-to-back reigning tournament champions Kutztown University in a tight tournament final. The Bears’ late surge against the Kutztown Golden Bears cut the deficit to two, but there was not enough time remaining to complete the comeback after Kutztown had built a 2 score lead with 90 seconds remaining.
Captain Tito Edjua '27 led the way for Brown with a standout individual performance, totaling six tries and nine conversion kicks for 48 points across the day. Freshman playmaker Inigo Langford '29 added a crucial spark off the bench, finishing with four tries and five conversions for 30 points. Graduate student wing Tripp King G'26 was second on the team in tries scored, dotting down five times as Brown’s attack consistently punished defenses in space.
Brown set the tone immediately in Match 1, racing to 31 first-half points in a 31-15 win over Northeastern. Matt Schwab G'26 scored twice, Edjua added two more tries, and King finished off another as the Bears’ pace and support lines overwhelmed the Huskies from the opening whistle. Edjua added three conversions to cap the explosive opening performance and send Brown into the rest of pool play with momentum.
That attacking efficiency carried into a 26-7 victory over Michigan in Match 2, where King again crossed for two tries, with Edjua and Langford also finding the try zone. Langford handled the bulk of the kicking in this one, slotting two conversions, while Edjua added another. In Match 3, Brown delivered its most decisive performance of pool play, controlling territory and possession in a 33-5 win over rival St. Bonaventure. Edjua struck for two more tries and four conversions, with additional scores from Marco Lapierre '28, King, and Langford as the Bears’ continuity and support in phase play continued to produce points.
By the semifinal, Brown’s defence—which had been “a little rocky early in the day,” according to the staff—locked in against American International College. The Bears conceded just one try in a 33-5 victory over the Yellow Jackets, repeatedly winning collisions and shutting down line breaks in the wide channels. St John Smith '28, Edjua, King, and Langford (two tries) were the try scorers. Smith, Langford, and Edjua each also converted kicks to keep the scoreboard steadily moving in Brown’s favor.
In the final, Kutztown punished Brown's mistakes early, turning two first-half turnovers into tries that ultimately proved the difference in a 19-17 decision. Lapierre, hooker Erik Estienne '28, and Smith scored tries for Brown, with Langford converting once as the Bears mounted a late push. Brown finished the match with an “incredible effort to score as time expired,” pulling within two points but running out of time to complete what would have been a dramatic comeback. Tournament organizers and Brown alike credited Kutztown for a composed and clinical performance in the title match. The win earned Kutztown a 3rd consecutive victory at the annual Monumental 7s tournament hosted by the New England Free Jacks of Major League Rugby.
Over five matches, Brown showcased a balanced profile: high-tempo, unpredictable, multi-phase attack led by Edjua, Langford, and King, and a defensive performance that tightened significantly as the day went on. With a deep roster contributing across the board and several underclassmen making key impacts in Quincy, Brown leaves Monumental 7s with four wins, a narrow final loss, and clear momentum heading into the remainder of the spring 7s schedule.
Brown Rugby now heads to Ireland for the 2026 spring break tour, where they'll play XVs matches with the University of Limerick and Corinthians RFC in Galway. The next 7s action for the Bears comes Saturday, April 7th when they'll host Babson College, Northeastern University, and University of Massachusetts for a friendly tournament.
