PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown University men's rugby team powered past American International College (AIC) 57-3 on Saturday, Oct. 31, in Providence, using a three-try burst late in the first half to build a commanding halftime lead. Brown's defence kept AIC out of the try zone throughout the match.
Erik Estienne opened the scoring at 8:30, finishing out wide after a six-player move and a final pass from Marco Lapierre. AIC's #14 received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle at 19:00, and St. John Smith scored 45 seconds later. Lapierre reversed the attack before Bobby Voth, Tito Edjua and Inigo Langford moved the ball wide, allowing Smith to beat two defenders with a dummy. Edjua converted, then added another conversion after a wide open Lapierre collected Voth's cross kick for a try at 24:00, putting Brown ahead 19-0.
AIC's lone penalty goal cut the margin to 19-3 at 26:45, but Brown answered quickly. Theo Romero scored at 28:00 on a counterattack from a goal-line dropout after Edjua drew the last defender and absorbed contact to put Romero away. Estienne added his second try at 32:00 following a passing move that began at midfield. Lapierre then finished through contact from three defenders at 37:45, with Langford absorbing a hit and connecting on the pass with Lapierre in the buildup. Edjua's conversion made it 36-3 at halftime. Estienne and Lapierre each finished with two tries and 10 points.
Brown added 21 unanswered points after the break. Following AIC's second yellow card, on #4 for a high tackle at 43:00, Patrick Minihane finished a sharp passing sequence at 46:00. Asa Rosenmeier tipped the ball to Ben Slattery, who then sent Minihane toward the line from 15 meters out. Held short by a defender, Minihane reached out one-handed to ground the ball with a slam, and Edjua converted for a 43-3 lead.
Edjua supplied the late attacking highlights. At 65:30, he counterattacked from near midfield following another AIC goal-line dropout, beating six defenders on his own to score. He then drew a defender at the goal line and delivered the final pass for Harry de Rosee's try at 69:15. Edjua converted all three second-half tries and finished with 17 points from one try and six conversions, completing Brown's nine-try performance.
The home finale also marked a farewell for nine seniors and graduate students. Michael Citarella, John Cox, Malcolm Grant, Wolfe Morn, Edjua, Minihane, Romero, Rosenmeier and Voth played their final XVs match on Marvel Field.
