Brown Pulls Away From Army development side for 43-14 Preseason Win

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Brown Men's Rugby scored two tries in a decisive six-minute stretch and finished with 17 unanswered points to defeat a mixed-side of Army players 43-14 in a preseason friendly Sunday. Played as six 20-minute periods with unlimited substitutions, the exhibition gave both teams an opportunity to manage their rosters and experiment with lineup combinations. Although this was not Army's top varsity lineup, the quality of their play was still remarkable and evident in their performance. The Bears fielded 40 players throughout the match, while still showcasing an attack capable of sustaining long phases of continuity.

Inigo Langford '29 opened the scoring at 6:50, finishing a scrum set move from about 15 meters out. Tito Edjua '27 converted for a 7-0 Brown lead. Army answered at the 20-minute mark with a converted try from a quick-tap penalty at the 5-meter line, but the Bears reclaimed the advantage through an impressive combination between Erik Estienne '28 and Wolfe Morn G'27.

Estienne poached the ball from a tackled Army player 30 meters away from Brown's own goal line, carried toward midfield and found Morn in support. The graduate student wing weaved through multiple defenders to complete a try from more than 50 meters away at 37:45, and Bobby Voth G'27 added the conversion to make it 14-7. The long-range score was one of several encouraging debut performances for Brown.

The Bears took command through two newcomers after the 50-minute mark. Freshman Ryan Schroeder '30 scooped up a loose ball following an errant Army pass at Brown's 22M and raced away for a try at 52:00. Six minutes later, sophomore transfer Freddie Bracken-Smith '29 took a quick-tap penalty from about 30 meters out, stepped through several attempted tackles and converted his own try to extend the margin to 26-7. Army responded at 68:45 with a converted try on another penalty-tap play from about 10 meters away.

Brown's defense remained sturdy in phase play, with both Army tries coming from penalty situations. At the other end, the Bears' pressure and support running produced three more tries in less than 10 minutes. Bracken-Smith sparked the first at 87:30, taking another quick tap from near Brown's own 30, crossing midfield and finding Marco Lapierre '28 in support for the finish. Bertie Deen '29 then completed a pin-and-pass movement from about 20 meters out at 94:00, running over a defender on the goalling out wide to touch it down.

Lapierre supplied the final flourish three minutes later, racing untouched from a quick-tap penalty about 45 meters away before converting his second try for the 43-14 final. Debut tries from Morn, Bracken-Smith, and Schroeder added to a positive preseason performance built on continuity, defensive resilience, and contributions throughout the lineup. Brown next hosts Fordham at 1 p.m. EDT on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026 on Marvel Field in Providence, RI.
