FAIRFIELD, CT - Brown University Men's Rugby B-side turned a three-point lead into a commanding halftime advantage with three unanswered tries, defeating the Fairfield University Stags B-side 36-12 on Saturday, October 3, in Fairfield, Connecticut. Ben Shirley scored 16 points and Lutendo Nematswerani supplied two tries as Brown's 19-point burst before the break proved decisive.
Shirley opened the scoring with a ninth-minute penalty kick. Brown then worked through four phases following a 10-meter lineout, moving the attack from sideline to sideline before Nematswerani crossed at 19:30. Shirley's conversion made it 10-0. Fairfield responded with a quick-tap penalty near the goal line at 25:00, scoring a try and adding the conversion to narrow Brown's advantage to 10-7.
Brown answered three minutes later with a sweeping counterattack. Kristo Klavins fielded a kick 20 meters inside Brown territory, and Bryan Onwuka absorbed contact from three defenders before offloading back to Klavins. Nematswerani took the next pass and carried nearly 50 meters, then released Matthew O'Connor in support near the goal line. O'Connor's finish pushed the lead to 15-7.
Another connected counterattack brought Nematswerani's second try at 34:00. Klavins again started the move by gathering a kick near Brown's 22-meter line. The ball traveled through Reid Spence, Onwuka, Ryan Schroeder and O'Connor, whose final pass sent Nematswerani away from about 40 meters out. Shirley converted to give Brown a 22-7 cushion, rewarding the support running and offloads that powered both counterattacks.
Brown's lineout attack supplied the next breakthrough. Shirley scored at 38:30 on the second phase following a maul close to the goal line, then converted his own try. That sequence completed the 19-point unanswered run and sent Brown into halftime ahead 29-7. The forwards' effective scrummaging and lineout execution gave the attack a strong foundation throughout the match.
Fairfield scored its second try from another quick-tap penalty near the goal line at 50:00, cutting the margin to 29-12. Brown responded at 53:30 when AJ Moberg crossed from a five-meter lineout maul. Shirley added the conversion for the final points, completing a kicking performance that included four successful conversions and one penalty.
Brown finished with five tries to Fairfield's two, combining productive set pieces with sharp counterattacking play. Nematswerani contributed 10 points and the long carry that created O'Connor's try, while O'Connor and Moberg added five points apiece. Defensively, Brown limited Fairfield's scoring to the two close-range quick taps. After starting the season 3-0 with a +198 point differential, the B's have earned a week off and will retake the field Saturday, October 17th at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY.
