Brown Rallies From Early Deficit to Race Past Siena B-Side 59-12

Brown University Men’s Rugby answered an early setback with 24 consecutive points and rolled to a 59-12 victory over Siena B-side on Saturday in Loudonville, New York. After conceding a converted try five minutes into the match, Brown settled into its attacking shape, took the lead through Lutendo Nematswerani’s try in the 20th minute, and controlled the rest of the contest. The response was an encouraging show of composure from a young side facing its first deficit of the season.
Ben Le Roux began the comeback at 9:30, finishing a launch play from a lineout maul at the 5-meter line. Ben Shirley converted to tie the score at 7. Nematswerani then crossed out wide from a set play, and another Shirley conversion put Brown ahead 14-7. Ryan Schroeder stretched the margin by finishing a scrum set play that began deep in Brown territory, highlighting the team’s ability to turn a defensive position into points.
Brown’s offensive continuity produced another try in the 32nd minute. Schroeder delivered an offload from a ruck to Reid Spence, who attacked the short side of a ruck and crossed to make it 24-7. Siena’s No. 14 received a yellow card for an intentional knock-on four minutes later, and Brown carried its 17-point advantage into halftime. The four-try first half showcased a balanced attack built around the lineout, scrum and quick work at the breakdown.
The momentum continued immediately after halftime. Thomas Bouchard cashed in for a 5-point freebie in the 42nd minute after Shirley beat 4 defenders (and one of the defenders twice) on a nearly 60-meter carry, popping to Bouchard in-goal to score between the posts, then Shirley added the conversion. Nematswerani scored his second try down the sideline from a pin-and-pass play in the 49th minute, and Schroeder followed with his second after a sustained phase of passing prowess at the hour mark. Shirley converted both tries as Brown pushed the lead to 45-7.
Michael Lau supplied one of the afternoon’s most forceful individual moments in the 68th minute, breaking several tackles on a long carry before reaching the try line. Siena added an unconverted try four minutes later, but Brown delivered the final response almost immediately. From an attacking lineout maul, Bobby Voth sent a kick pass to Luke Coll, who ran a strike line and scored in the 74th minute. Shirley’s conversion completed the 59-12 victory.
Brown finished with nine tries and scored 35 points in the second half. Nematswerani and Schroeder led the try scorers with two apiece, while Le Roux, Spence, Bouchard, Lau and Coll each added one. Shirley made seven of nine conversions for 14 points and also contributed to Bouchard’s try, helping Brown turn its early 7-0 deficit into a convincing team performance. Brown will next travel to face Fairfield on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, at 2 p.m. EDT.
