FAIRFIELD, CT - Brown University Men's Rugby turned a halftime deficit into a 27-16 victory over Fairfield on Saturday, Oct. 3, in Fairfield, Connecticut, with a quick-strike try setting off a 19-point run. Inigo Langford's 70-plus-meter 50/22 kick and quick lineout set up St. John Smith just 30 seconds into the second half, swinging the lead back to Brown.
A large, rowdy Fairfield home crowd helped set an intense tone, and the Stags aggressive play challenged Brown early. Brown's defense kept the match tight through key turnovers, but Fairfield broke through at 20 minutes with a kick-and-chase try after recovering a loose ball kicked from near the 22-meter line. Tito Edjua answered with a penalty kick in the 29th minute to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Fairfield restored its five-point cushion with a penalty kick at 32 minutes. Brown needed only a minute to respond. Edjua counterattacked from near midfield and scored in the corner, bringing the teams level at 8-8. A Fairfield penalty kick at the end of the half put the Stags back ahead, 11-8, leaving Brown with another deficit to erase.
Langford provided the spark immediately after the restart. His long 50/22 kick gained territory, and he raced down the sideline to take a quick lineout to Smith, who carried Fairfield defenders over the try line. The conversion made it 15-11. Theo Romero followed with Brown's third try at 47 minutes, on a 40-meter carry, and Edjua added the conversion to stretch the advantage to 22-11, a two-score lead.
Brown then turned scrum pressure into another five points. Harry de Rosee scored from the back of a driving scrum about five meters out at 61 minutes, completing the unanswered surge and making it 27-11. Strong defense helped protect that lead before Fairfield added a kick-and-chase try at 78 minutes for the final margin.
Brown finished with four tries, two conversions and one penalty kick. Edjua contributed 12 points through a try, a penalty kick and two conversions, while Smith, Romero and de Rosee supplied the other tries. The upcoming UCLA trip opens Brown's Scholar's Cup schedule. Brown will look to get out on the front foot early in their next contest on Saturday, Oct. 10, against UCLA.
