Brown Turns Fast Start Into 35-0 Rugby Win Over AIC B-Side
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown University men's rugby team struck just 75 seconds into a 35-0 victory over AIC B-side on Saturday, Oct. 31, in Providence, using an early lineout breakthrough to launch a five-try performance. AIC ended the match after 25 minutes of play.
Lutendo Nematswerani delivered the opening try at 1:15, finishing a lineout set play that began more than 40 meters out with service from Malcolm Grant. Brown quickly found another route to the try line. Wolfe Morn scored at 3:30 on a solo counterattack covering more than 50 meters, and Ben Shirley converted both opening tries to give Brown a 14-0 advantage.
Brown's defensive lineout work then provided the platform for two more scores. Nematswerani finished out wide at 9:15 following a defensive lineout win, collecting a second try and bringing their individual contribution to 10 points. Another defensive lineout win led to a team move from more than 30 meters out, with Freddie Bracken-Smith finishing at 17:00. Shirley added both conversions as Brown stretched the lead to 28-0.
Bertie Deen supplied the final try at 21:00, taking a close-range penalty tap and carrying over to make it 33-0. Shirley converted to complete the scoring while Brown kept AIC scoreless through the shortened contest. He finished 5-for-5 on conversions, adding 10 points with a perfect afternoon from the tee.
