PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown University men's rugby team powered past Syracuse B-side 65-0 on Saturday, Oct. 17, in Syracuse, taking command with a seven-try first half. Luke Coll scored five tries in the victory.
With several players selected for the first XV, Brown used different combinations and had several players making their first starts with this group, including in key positions. The reshuffled lineup produced tries through close-range carries, quick-tap penalties and lineout attacks while the defense held Syracuse scoreless throughout both halves.
Thomas Bouchard opened the scoring at 1:15 with a close-range pick-and-go off a ruck, and Malcolm Grant converted for a 7-0 lead. Reid Spence finished out wide from a lineout at 4:30 before Coll broke through on a long carry at 8:30. Ben Le Roux struck from a quick-tap penalty near the goal line at 12:30, extending the advantage to 22-0.
Brown continued to capitalize on quick restarts when Jamie Tappin finished out wide following another quick-tap penalty at 18:00. Grant added the conversion, then converted again after Coll powered through several defenders at the goal line at 20:30. Bryan Onwuka carried over from close range at 30:00, and Brown reached halftime ahead 43-0.
Coll supplied Brown's next three tries, showing finishing ability in both tight spaces and open field. A tip pass from Iggy de la Fuente set up Coll's third try at 30:40, with Kristo Klavins converting to make it 50-0. Coll then finished a lineout maul from 10 meters out at 38:15 before racing more than 60 meters for another try at 40:30. That fifth finish brought Coll's individual total to 25 points.
Sam Joffe completed Brown's scoring with a quick pick-and-go at the goal line at 50:30, when Syracuse ended the match early. Brown finished with 11 tries and five conversions, with Grant contributing three conversions and Klavins one. The visitors added 22 second-half points without conceding.
