PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown University men's rugby team surged to a 78-point halftime lead on its way to a 134-0 victory over Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 17, in Syracuse, N.Y. Wolfe Morn led the attack with seven tries for 35 points. Brown finished with 20 tries from 10 scorers and 17 successful conversions while keeping Syracuse off the scoreboard.
Morn opened the scoring in the corner at 3:30, and Bertie Deen followed with a strong, short carry through the goal-line defense at 8:15. Inigo Langford added the conversion before Morn struck twice more in quick succession. A kick and chase of a loose ball produced Morn's second try at 10:00, and a scrum near midfield set up the third at 12:30. Langford converted both to give Brown a 26-0 advantage.
Brown kept finding openings through its set pieces and counterattacks. Erik Estienne peeled off a lineout maul for about 20 meters before the ball went wide to Lutendo Nematswerani for a try at 15:00. Harry de Rosee finished a counterattack four minutes later, and Estienne scored from a lineout maul at 21:45. Langford then scored following a defensive scrum win and converted his own try. Nematswerani recovered the ensuing bouncing restart and raced more than 50 meters to score at 26:00, extending the lead to 61-0 after another conversion.
Ryan Schroeder finished a team try at 28:00 before Morn added two more ahead of halftime. A quick-tap penalty close to the goal line brought the first, and a defensive lineout win created the second at 37:00. Langford's ninth conversion completed a 23-point individual performance and sent Brown into the break ahead 78-0 after 12 first-half tries.
Asa Rosenmeier scored Brown's first two tries after the break, peeling off a maul at 43:15 and finishing an inside switch at 48:30. Scrumhalf Thomas Bouchardcreated the second by faking toward the open side, cutting back and passing to Rosenmeierto put him through. Ben Shirley converted both scores, beginning a perfect eight-conversion second half worth 16 points.
Morn's sixth try came from a scrum about 70 meters out at 54:30. Schroeder followed with a score stemming from a defensive lineout win about 85 meters out, then intercepted a Syracuse pass at 62:00 to complete a three-try, 15-point outing in his first side debut. Bouchard broke away on a roughly 60-meter pick-and-go two minutes later, and Morn beat several defenders out wide for a seventh try at 68:30. Cameron Kean finished Brown's final attack at 72:00 after Morn made a 50-meter line break off a lineout. Shirley's conversion completed a 56-point second half.
Next week, during Brown's annual family weekend activities, the #3 ranked Bears host the #14 ranked Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame in its second match of the FirstPoint USA Scholars Cup on Berylson Family Field on Saturday, Oct. 24th at 2:00 PM.
