Greenville struck early and maintained control in a 6-0 win over the East Alton-Wood River Oilers women’s soccer team Thursday night on the brand new OilerNation Field in Wood River.
The visitors delivered a major blow just 57 seconds into the match, capitalizing on a quick strike to grab a 1-0 lead before the Oilers could settle in. Despite the difficult start, East Alton-Wood River responded with composure, tightening up defensively and slowing Greenville’s attack for much of the opening half. Greenville did not find its second goal until under 20 minutes remained before halftime and added a third before the break to take a 3-0 advantage into the interval.
Playing with only two substitutes available, the Oilers were forced to log heavy minutes across the lineup but continued to compete throughout both halves. There were stretches in which East Alton-Wood River controlled play in the Greenville half, stringing together passes and generating pressure in the attacking third. Chances from Fallyn Sanders and Eva Steiniger highlighted those spells of possession, but both opportunities were turned aside by the Greenville goalkeeper.
In goal, Kaylee Halleman turned in one of the Oilers’ standout performances of the night. Halleman faced 24 shots and finished with 18 saves, repeatedly denying Greenville on dangerous looks to keep the match from becoming more lopsided. Her work in the box, particularly during extended periods of Greenville pressure, anchored an Oilers back line that was under constant strain given the limited numbers.
Greenville added three more goals in the second half to close out the 6-0 result, but East Alton-Wood River continued to battle to the final whistle, still finding moments to push forward and test the visiting defense. On a night that marked the debut of OilerNation Field, the contest provided valuable early-season experience for a roster asked to play significant minutes across the pitch.
With the opener complete, the Oilers will look to build on the stretches of sustained possession and the strong goalkeeping effort as they continue their schedule. The performance, despite the score line, offered a foundation for improvement as East Alton-Wood River moves deeper into the spring season.
