WOOD RIVER, Ill. — A pair of early innings decided a true pitcher’s duel Wednesday as East Alton-Wood River dropped a 3-1 non-conference matchup to Civic Memorial at Leroy Emerick Field in Wood River.

All four runs crossed in the first two innings. Civic Memorial pushed across a run in the top of the first, but the Oilers answered immediately to knot the score 1-1. The Eagles then struck for two more in the second to build a 3-1 advantage, and that margin held the rest of the way as both starters settled in and controlled the game.

Sophomore right-hander Ellie Beachum turned in a standout performance in the circle for the Oilers. Beachum went the distance, throwing seven innings while allowing just four hits and three runs, only two of which were earned. She walked two and piled up 11 strikeouts, keeping Civic Memorial off the board after the second inning and giving East Alton-Wood River a chance to climb back.

The Oilers’ offense generated opportunities but could not break through against Civic Memorial starter Olivia Monroe, who finished with 10 strikeouts over seven innings. East Alton-Wood River matched Civic Memorial with four hits and drew three walks, but left six runners on base, including key chances in the middle innings as Monroe worked out of trouble.

At the plate, junior infielder Emily Fry paced the Oilers’ attack, going 2-for-3 with a double and driving in the team’s lone run in the first inning. East Alton-Wood River’s lineup also forced deep counts and put traffic on the bases, contributing to a tight, low-scoring contest dominated by both pitching staffs.

Defensively, the Oilers were solid behind Beachum, committing just one error compared with three by Civic Memorial. East Alton-Wood River’s infield helped limit further damage after the second inning, turning routine plays and preventing the Eagles from extending the lead despite a few baserunners in the middle frames.

The loss drops East Alton-Wood River to 0-1 in the early going, but the performance from Beachum in the circle and Fry in the lineup provided encouraging signs. With strong pitching and clean defense already in place, the Oilers will look to capitalize on scoring chances in upcoming games as they continue non-conference play and prepare for the conference schedule ahead.
