Oilers open outdoor season at home with strong individual wins and relay results
East Alton-Wood River opened its outdoor track and field season at home Tuesday night against Father McGivney, Roxana and Wesclin, with the girls placing third and the boys finishing fourth in a meet that featured several event wins, relay success and multiple personal-record efforts for the Oilers.
Brooklyn Rexford delivered the top finish for the girls team, winning the long jump at 14 feet, 10 inches. The Oilers also piled up six second-place finishes. Gina Truax was runner-up in the 100 hurdles, Kylah Wreath placed second in the shot put, and Mackenzie Minner added a second-place finish in the 800. East Alton-Wood River also got second-place relay results from its 4x400 and 4x800 units, with Minner, Braelyn Hartkopf, Eleanor Brame and Ami Parsons contributing to those efforts. Additional scoring support came from Averi Gilliam, Emalyn Murphy, Addison Roethe, Tara Jones, Dyari McGee and Gabby Johnson as the girls put together a balanced opening meet.
The boys team, competing short-handed, still turned in four first-place finishes. Jasiah Brown won the triple jump, Noah Willeford took first in the 3,200 meters, Carson LeMond captured the 400, and the 4x400 relay team of Bennett McCormick, Brown, Taven Wardein and LeBron Reed closed with another victory. Wardein was a late addition to that relay lineup and helped the Oilers finish the night with one of their strongest performances.
Several of the boys' best efforts came through personal improvement. Wardein posted a significant personal record in the 4x800, while Willeford turned in a busy and productive day with a personal-record performance in the 1,600 to go with his win in the 3,200 and work in the 4x800. Deontre Breaziel and Isaiah Carmen both opened their seasons by running multiple races, and Peyton added points in the 4x800 and 4x200.
The Oilers also saw a solid start from the throwing group. Blake Sorgea led that unit with a fourth-place finish in the shot put, while Matt Bush and Ryan Burney added early-season contributions as East Alton-Wood River began building momentum after the indoor season.
For an opening outdoor meet, the Oilers showed depth across the lineup and strength in the relays, distance races and field events. With event victories from Rexford, Brown, Willeford and LeMond, plus a series of runner-up finishes and early personal records, East Alton-Wood River left its home meet with a promising foundation for the rest of the spring.
