The East Alton-Wood River boys track and field team turned in a series of season-best efforts Friday at the Cahokia Conference Meet in Roxana, with the Oilers led by personal records from LeBron Reed, Tavis Brown and Matthew Bush, along with a pair of fourth-place relay finishes.

On a warm, windy day, East Alton-Wood River continued to show improvement across multiple events. Blake Sorgea delivered one of the top field performances for the Oilers, placing sixth in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 11 inches. Bush also posted a personal record in the discus, improving from 21.01 meters to 21.64. Those results gave the Oilers a solid foundation in the throwing events and added to a steady overall meet for the team.

The sprint relays provided two of the closest near-podium finishes of the day. The 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter teams of Bennett McCormick, Tavis Brown, Lucas Heaton and Carson LeMond each finished fourth, narrowly missing medals both times while posting their fastest marks of the season. Brown also stood out individually in the 100 meters, placing sixth overall in a personal-record 12.2 seconds. Deontre Breaziel matched that trend with a PR of 13.1 in the same event.

It’s good to see the boys competing at their best as a reward for their work.

Reed delivered another strong distance showing for East Alton-Wood River. The senior ran a personal-record 2:05 in the 800 and later came back with a 5:02 effort in the 1600 meters, giving the Oilers valuable production in two demanding races. His day helped cap one of the team’s most complete sets of performances at the meet.

East Alton-Wood River closed the night with a season-best run in the 4x400 relay. McCormick, LeMond, Brown and Reed handled the final event for the Oilers, finishing the meet with another encouraging result as the team continued to build momentum deeper into the spring schedule.
