When Oilers guard Kaylynn Buttry steps onto the floor for East Alton-Wood River Community High School, she’s not just another scorer — she’s a program-changing leader who has rewritten the record book while setting a new standard in the classroom. In the final season before the Oilers move from the Mississippi Division to the Illinois Division of the Cahokia Conference, Buttry delivered a historic year that perfectly captured her impact on the program’s past, present and future.

This season, Buttry became the Oilers’ first-ever All-Conference selection in the Mississippi Division, a milestone that arrives just as EAWR prepares for a new chapter in a different division. Her play backed up every bit of that honor. The senior guard averaged an impressive 19.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, producing a stat line rarely seen in EAWR history. Whether she was attacking the rim, knocking down jumpers or battling on the glass, Buttry consistently carried the Oilers with a relentless effort that teammates and opponents alike couldn’t help but notice.

Her scoring output this year alone would be enough to cement her legacy. Buttry poured in 624 points this season, the highest single-season total in EAWR history. Game after game, she shouldered the offensive load, finding ways to score in tough conference matchups and big non-conference tests alike. That consistency wasn’t a surprise to those who watched her grow over four varsity seasons, but it was still remarkable to see her cap her career with the most prolific scoring season the Oilers have ever seen.

To be selected to the All-Conference Team in the best girls basketball conference in the state is a huge honor and a testament to the skill and ability KayLynn brings every time she steps on the court.

Across her four-year varsity career, Buttry finished with 1,533 points, placing her second all-time in Oilers girls basketball history and second all-time among all players — boys or girls — ever to wear an EAWR uniform. That kind of company says everything about her place in Oiler history. She didn’t just fill up box scores; she set a standard of toughness, competitiveness and composure that younger players could follow. Her influence will echo long after her graduation.

What makes Buttry’s story even more inspiring is that her excellence extends far beyond the court. She ranks fourth in her class with a 4.488 GPA, balancing a demanding basketball schedule with high-level academic achievement. That commitment to doing things the right way has earned her the opportunity to continue both her basketball and academic journey at Greenville University, where she has committed to play at the next level. For younger Oilers, she is proof that you can chase big athletic goals without ever sacrificing the classroom.

As East Alton-Wood River girls basketball closes its time in the Mississippi Division and prepares for the move to the Illinois Division, Kaylynn Buttry’s legacy stands as a bridge between eras. She leaves as a record-setter, an All-Conference trailblazer and a model student-athlete whose name will be mentioned whenever future Oilers talk about what it means to represent EAWR. Her journey has been a point of pride for the school and community — and her next chapter at Greenville University promises to make the Oilers family even prouder.
