Before she ever signed a letter of intent, KayLynn Buttry had already cemented her place in East Alton-Wood River Community High School history. The Oilers varsity guard/forward, a four-year starter for the Oilers Women’s Basketball program, turned her senior season into a legacy tour—rewriting record books while setting a new standard for what it means to wear maroon and gold. Now, with pen to paper and her future set at Greenville University, KayLynn’s journey stands as a powerful example of how talent, work ethic and pride in one’s school can come together in unforgettable fashion.

On the court, KayLynn’s numbers speak loudly. She averaged 19.5 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game this season, dominating both the perimeter and the paint in a way few players ever do. Her 624 points this year are the highest single-season total in EAWR history, a school record that reflects not just her scoring ability, but her consistency night after night. Over four varsity seasons, she poured in 1,533 career points—good for second all-time in Oilers girls basketball history and second all-time among all players, boys or girls, to ever suit up for EAWR.

Those accomplishments didn’t happen overnight. As a four-year starter, KayLynn grew from a promising underclassman into the player opponents game-planned around. She handled that attention with poise, turning double-teams into opportunities for teammates and never shying away from big moments. Her competitiveness and commitment to excellence became the heartbeat of the Oilers program. Younger players learned quickly: if KayLynn was in the gym, the standard was high—whether it was a midweek practice or a rivalry game.

Yet, for all the records and highlight-reel performances, those around the program talk just as much about who KayLynn is as a person. She has represented East Alton-Wood River with pride, carrying herself as a leader in the locker room, in the classroom and in the community. Her 4.488 GPA is a testament to her ability to work hard in the classroom, an attribute that will serve her well as she balances college course work with basketball.

That’s why her signing with Greenville University feels like more than just a personal milestone; it’s a celebration for the entire Oiler family. KayLynn will continue her academic and basketball career at the next level, carrying the lessons and pride of EAWR with her. For current and future Oilers, her story shows what’s possible when you commit yourself fully to your sport and your school. From her first start as a young player to her final game as one of the most prolific scorers in EAWR history, KayLynn Buttry has left a lasting mark—and the Oilers community can’t wait to watch her keep writing that story at Greenville.
