Grant Union Falls to Heppner Despite Two Rushing Touchdowns
JOHN_DAY, Ore. - Grant Union High School could not slow Heppner’s offense in a 76-14 varsity football loss Friday, Oct. 9, at Heppner High School. The Prospectors faced the No. 1 team in Class 2A. Grant Union played hard against the top-ranked opponent, but its defense struggled to produce the stops needed to keep pace.
Garrett and Rowdy supplied the Prospectors’ touchdowns, each reaching the end zone on a rushing play. Those scores gave Grant Union two offensive highlights in a difficult matchup. The ground game accounted for both touchdowns, while the Prospectors also received a contribution through the air from a player stepping into action after an injury.
Sam entered when Fletcher was injured and caught a couple of passes, providing a bright spot as Grant Union adjusted to the personnel change. The catches made Sam another contributor to the Prospectors’ offense alongside the two touchdown scorers. Fletcher’s injury added a challenge to an already demanding game against a defense backed by Heppner’s high-scoring attack.
The central obstacle for Grant Union was on the other side of the ball: Heppner’s scoring kept the Prospectors from making their own touchdowns enough to stay competitive. The defensive struggles overshadowed the rushing scores and Sam’s receiving contribution. The Prospectors will look to bounce back in their next contest against Heppner on Monday, Oct. 12.
