Cubs Men’s Basketball Eyes Disciplined, Defense-First Identity in Upcoming Season

Loyola High School of Los Angeles will lean into a familiar identity this winter as the Cubs men’s varsity basketball program prepares for the upcoming season: disciplined, defense-first and fundamentally sound. With preseason practices underway on the Venice Boulevard campus, Loyola is focused on reestablishing itself as a tough, organized unit that defends the length of the floor and shares the ball on offense.

The Cubs return a core group that understands the demands of varsity play and the expectations of the program. While roles may shift and new contributors will emerge, the emphasis remains on experienced guards to initiate the offense, control tempo and set the tone defensively at the perimeter. In the frontcourt, returning bigs are expected to anchor the paint, rebound consistently and provide rim protection, giving Loyola a balanced look at both ends of the floor.

Coaches have stressed that this year’s group will be defined less by a single star and more by depth, cohesion and execution. Practices have centered on half-court defensive rotations, communication on switches and closing possessions with box-outs. On offense, Loyola is working to sharpen spacing, ball movement and late-clock decision-making, aiming to limit turnovers and generate high-percentage shots through patient, team-oriented sets.

The schedule will give the Cubs an early measuring stick on Jan. 10, when Loyola is slated to host Caruso Hall on campus at Venice Boulevard in Los Angeles. That matchup is expected to serve as a tone-setter, providing insight into how well the team’s preseason focus on defensive intensity and disciplined execution translates against a live opponent. The home setting should offer the Cubs an opportunity to establish momentum and identity in front of their own community.

Beyond that contest, Loyola anticipates a slate of league and nonleague tests that will demand consistency and resilience. The Cubs’ coaching staff has emphasized that success will hinge on how quickly returners and new faces blend into clearly defined roles, and how committed the roster remains to defending for four quarters each night.
