NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Newcastle High stopped a tying two-point conversion in the fourth quarter and held on for a 22-20 junior varsity victory over Hot Springs on Monday. The Dogies improved to 2-0 after protecting the lead through a scoreless second half in wet, 51-degree conditions in Newcastle.
Brayton Von Eye and Zeke Morrill gave Newcastle a fast start. Von Eye connected with Morrill for a 6-yard touchdown, and Von Eye was successful on the two-point conversion run to put the Dogies ahead 8-0 in the first quarter. Hot Springs responded when Jhett Nordick broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run, but its conversion attempt failed, leaving Newcastle in front 8-6.
Weston McConkey powered the Dogies through the second quarter. His 53-yard touchdown run, followed by the Tanner Lenardson extra point, stretched the lead to 15-6. Gaige Sides answered with a 40-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion to pull Hot Springs within 15-14, but McConkey scored again on a 4-yard run. Another Lenardson extra point sent Newcastle into halftime with a 22-14 advantage.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, and the Dogies continued to lean on a ground game that produced 213 of their 222 total yards. McConkey carried 24 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns while also making one catch for 3 yards. Von Eye completed 2 of 4 passes for 9 yards and a touchdown, and Morrill finished with one 6-yard touchdown reception. Waylon Stolhammer added 14 rushing yards on three carries.
Hot Springs, which finished with a 228-222 edge in total offense, made its final push on Sides' 19-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. The score cut Newcastle's lead to 22-20, but the tying conversion failed. The Dogies converted 4 of 8 third downs and 1 of 2 fourth downs, while holding Hot Springs to 2 of 8 on third down and 0 of 5 on fourth down. Newcastle also recorded an interception and overcame two turnovers to preserve the win. The Dogies varsity will next host Torrington at 7 p.m. MDT Friday, Sept. 25, 2026 for Homecoming.
