NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Newcastle High School pulled away from host Wheatland High for a 44-22 conference football victory on Oct. 16, answering a second-quarter challenge with 10 straight points before halftime. The win kept the Dogies’ playoff hopes alive entering the final week of the regular season.

Newcastle opened with a 70-yard, six-play touchdown drive capped by Colten Hatheway’s 15-yard run. A successful two-point conversion made it 8-0. Landon Hatheway then caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Dane Crabtree to give the Dogies a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Wheatland cut the deficit to eight in the second quarter when Hayden Steinsiek connected with Bryson Lopez for a 49-yard touchdown. Newcastle responded with a 5-yard touchdown run and successful extra point, then Tanner Lenardson kicked a field goal for a 24-6 halftime advantage.

Landon Hatheway accounted for that second-quarter touchdown and added scoring runs of 1 and 5 yards in the third quarter, pushing Newcastle’s lead to 38-6. Another 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth made it 44-6. Hatheway finished with 151 rushing yards on 23 carries, four rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. The brothers accounted for all six Dogie touchdowns.

Newcastle gained 294 yards on the ground and 377 total yards while holding a 22-7 advantage in first downs. Crabtree completed 5-of-9 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown without an interception, adding 76 rushing yards. Defensively, the Dogies limited Wheatland to 35 rushing yards and stopped all three Bulldog fourth-down attempts. Each Hatheway brother intercepted a pass to end a Wheatland drive.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the fourth quarter. Freshman Kane Kuntz caught a 67-yard touchdown pass, part of an 82-yard receiving performance, before Grady Bohlander added a 60-yard touchdown reception. Both passes came from Steinsiek and were followed by successful two-point conversions. Steinsiek finished with 224 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The Dogies stand 4-2 in conference play but need a win or help elsewhere to reach the playoffs, with their earlier loss at Glenrock giving Glenrock the advantage entering the final week. Newcastle plays No. 1 Big Horn next on Friday at Schoonmaker Field, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. for the Dogies’ “Kick Cancer” pink game.
