NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Newcastle High School defeated Burns 42-20 at home Friday, Oct. 2, using a 27-yard touchdown pass from Dane Crabtree to Hunter Finley to regain breathing room after Burns twice closed within eight points. The Dogies scored 14 unanswered fourth-quarter points to secure the conference victory.

A strong opening kickoff return set up Crabtree’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Colten Hatheway. Finley, a freshman, added a 12-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 first-quarter lead, and Colten Hatheway scored from 3 yards out in the second quarter to make it 21-0. Burns responded with Teegan McLaughlin’s 3-yard touchdown run late in the half, cutting Newcastle’s advantage to 21-7.

Burns adjusted after halftime by attacking the edges of Newcastle’s defense and scored on a 14-yard run on its opening possession. Mason Rawhouser blocked the extra point, leaving the Dogies ahead 21-13. Landon Hatheway answered with runs of 41 and 28 yards on the ensuing drive before Crabtree scored from 3 yards out. Burns then added a 4-yard touchdown run and extra point to pull within 28-20 entering the fourth quarter.

The pivotal fourth-quarter pass went through the hands of Burns defender Dane Wilshusen, who had a clear path to the end zone had he secured the ball. Instead, Finley caught it and raced for the 27-yard touchdown, extending Newcastle’s lead to 35-20 after the extra point. Crabtree capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run as the Dogies outscored Burns 14-0 in the final quarter.

Landon Hatheway powered Newcastle’s ground game with 207 yards on 30 carries. The Dogies totaled 383 yards, including 262 rushing. Crabtree completed 8 of 12 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, adding 32 rushing yards and two scores. Colten Hatheway caught five passes for 62 yards and a touchdown, using his speed and quickness against man-to-man coverage for three key third-down conversion catches. C. Phillips added a 29-yard reception. The Hunter Finley to Brayton Von Eye to Tanner Lenardson (all freshman) PAT operation made all six extra points.

Rawhouser finished with eight tackles, three assists, a sack and a tackle for loss in addition to the blocked extra point. Colten Hatheway also intercepted a pass. Tanner Lenardson contributed five tackles, an assist and a tackle for loss. Newcastle finished with 11 first downs to Burns’ five, and each team committed one turnover.

The victory created a four-way tie for the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds in the 2A East Conference after Burns entered with an advantage in the race for the second seed. The Dogies will travel to Moorcroft, who is 0-5 and has been outscored 177-36, next Friday. Despite Moorcroft's offensive struggles, its defense has played strongly of late. The Dogies will look to start a streak in their next contest on Friday, Oct. 9, against Moorcroft.
