GLENROCK, Wyo. - Glenrock scored the deciding touchdown on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter and held Newcastle scoreless the rest of the way to defeat the Dogies 26-20 in their 2A East Conference opener Thursday. The loss ended Newcastle’s five-game winning streak against the Herders, a run dating to 2021 in which the Dogies had outscored Glenrock 168-51.
Glenrock opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run, but Newcastle responded with 14 points in the second quarter. Dane Crabtree pulled the Dogies within 7-6 on a 7-yard run before Mason Rawhouser changed the game on special teams. Rawhouser blocked a kick and returned it for a touchdown, and Newcastle converted the two-point attempt to take a 14-7 halftime lead.
The Herders tied the game on a 14-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, but Crabtree and Colten Hatheway quickly restored Newcastle’s advantage. Crabtree found Hatheway for a 34-yard touchdown that put the Dogies ahead 20-14. Hatheway finished with four receptions for 80 yards, while Crabtree completed 6 of 18 passes for 98 yards and added 37 rushing yards.
Glenrock answered with a 2-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 20, then moved in front for good on its 1-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Newcastle had opportunities to shift momentum, but a costly fumble in the red zone ended one threat. On another promising deep throw, a Glenrock defensive back wrestled the ball away from the intended receiver before going to the ground.
The Dogies finished with 188 total yards, including 90 on the ground, as their traditionally productive rushing attack struggled to find room. L. Hatheway led Newcastle with 56 yards on 15 carries and added two receptions for 18 yards. Rawhouser also contributed two blocked kicks, a sack, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery, while Dylan Foster recorded 10 total tackles. Crabtree added an interception on defense.
Glenrock accumulated 317 yards, with 303 coming on the ground, and Joel Williams led the Herders with 159 rushing yards. The Dogies will look to rebound on the road against Tongue River on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1:30 a.m. GMT+5:30.
