NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Newcastle High School placed eighth in the varsity girls race and 13th in the varsity boys race at the Wyoming State Cross-Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 24, in Cheyenne, led by LJ James in ninth and Jaden McGuire in 45th. James earned All-State honors as a freshman.

The girls raced first, facing a wind chill of 20 degrees and gusts reaching 30 mph. It was the Dogies’ first race in those conditions, adding uncertainty to a championship meet that capped a season-long goal of producing their best races over the final two weeks. Despite the cold and wind, Newcastle delivered three personal-best performances across the two races.

James finished in 20:16, just eight seconds shy of a personal record. Christine Swentesky followed in 30th at 22:12. Behind the leading pair, Cheyanne Bloom placed 64th in 24:40, Chanel Hanson took 67th in 25:00 and Millie Paulton finished 71st in 25:25, giving the Dogies three finishers within a 45-second span through the middle of their lineup.

Hollie Swentesky crossed in 75th at 25:58, followed just three seconds later by Tacie Carter in 76th at 26:01. Carter’s personal record supplied another individual milestone on a day when the weather made chasing fast times especially challenging.

McGuire paced the boys in 19:17, while Dylan Conley earned a personal best of 19:47 to finish 52nd. Lane Carter placed 61st in 20:34, and Lucas Scribner followed eight seconds later in 64th at 20:42. That close finish kept Newcastle’s third and fourth runners together in the results.

The boys had set ambitious time goals entering state, and most finished just shy of their personal records while battling the wind. Kendrick Blumenthal placed 79th in 22:13. Leigh Beason completed the Dogies’ lineup in 96th at 26:20, joining Conley in setting a personal best.
