NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Newcastle High School’s varsity girls won the team title and the varsity boys placed third at the Sundance cross country meet Friday, Oct. 9, in Sundance. LJ James won the girls race with a personal-best time of 20:08.
The course presented more challenging hills than the Dogies had faced over the past month, but nearly every runner delivered a season or personal best. A slight breeze accompanied the racing as both teams used pack running to help teammates tackle the tougher terrain and sustain their effort.
LJ James went out fast, took the lead and held it throughout the girls race. Christine stayed among the top 10 before making a strong finishing push to claim fourth. Behind the front-runners, the Lady Dogies grouped together and pushed one another toward improved times.
The girls results included Christine Swentesky in fourth at 22:09 and Cheyanne Bloom in ninth with a personal-best 24:36. Millie Paulton followed just six seconds later, placing 10th in a personal-best 24:42. Chanel Hanson took 12th in a season-best 25:49, while lady Dogie Hollie Swentesky finished 13th in a season-best 26:08. Tacie Carter completed the Lady Dogies’ lineup in 14th with a personal-best 26:50.
The boys race opened at a demanding pace, with every Dogie running their fastest opening mile of the season. Jaden finished fourth with a personal best, while the remaining runners followed the girls’ approach by packing together and pushing each other. Dylan returned below 20 minutes to tie a career best, and Lane delivered the strongest race of his high school career.
In the boys results, Jaden McGuire placed fourth in a personal-best 18:55. Dylan Conley took ninth in 19:47, matching a personal best, and Lane Carter finished 10th in a personal-best 20:11. Kendrick Blumenthal added a season-best 21:31 for 13th, followed by Lucas Scribner in 14th at 22:39. Leigh Beason placed 21st with a personal-best 26:32.
The next course will offer a different challenge, with a much flatter layout than Sundance’s hills. The Dogies compete next at the conference meet next week in Wheatland.
