Newcastle Earns Four Qualifying Swims During Two-Meet Cody High School Trip

Newcastle High School’s small lineup produced four qualifying swims, two event victories and several personal records during back-to-back girls swimming meets Sept. 3-4 in Cody High School. The Lady Dogies opened the trip with losses to Worland and Cody at the Cody Triple Duals before scoring 40 points and placing fifth at the Sept. 4 Terry Bartlett Invitational.
Newcastle fell 125-33 to Worland and 148-35 to Cody in the triple dual, but Allie Lunstra gave the team victories in both of her individual events. Allie Lunstra won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 38.93 seconds, a Class 3A qualifying time that was six-tenths of a second off her best from the previous season. She added a win in the 100 backstroke, finishing in another 3A qualifying time of 1:12.92 and beating the runner-up by 15 seconds.
The rest of Newcastle’s lineup added personal-best efforts and points. Natalie Dean finished sixth in the 50 freestyle in 36.04 and placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:53.44, improving her breaststroke best by five seconds. Lilly Lopez was seventh in the 50 freestyle at 37.55 and sixth in the 100 freestyle at 1:20.69. Lilly also cut two seconds from her personal record in the 50 freestyle and raced to a strong showing in the 100 freestyle.
Newcastle closed Thursday’s competition with an exhibition 400 freestyle relay in 5:07.23 after Worland helped the short-handed Lady Dogies complete a lineup by providing a swimmer. The full relay order was not identified, but Lilly swam the third leg in 1:25.61, lowering her personal best for 100 freestyle by one second. The cooperative relay reflected the close-knit nature of the swimming community while giving Newcastle another competitive race.
Despite fatigue from the opening meet, Newcastle returned Friday to compete against four teams, including a Lander squad that won the invitational with 491 points. Allie Lunstra again recorded the team’s top finishes, placing second in the 50 freestyle with a 3A qualifying time of 28.14 and third in the 100 butterfly at 1:12.94. The butterfly performance met the Class 4A qualifying standard, with Allie Lunstra narrowly edged for second over the final 25 yards.
Newcastle’s scoring depth continued with Lilly Lopez, who placed ninth in the 50 freestyle in 36.12 and 15th in the 100 freestyle in 1:23.90. Natalie Dean finished 11th in the 50 freestyle at 37.53 and seventh in the 100 breaststroke at 2:01.23. Lilly finished within a half-second of her Thursday 100 freestyle time, while she and Natalie stayed close to their previous day’s marks in the 50 freestyle. Worland placed second with 212 points, followed by Powell with 171, Cody with 170 and Newcastle with 40 as the Lady Dogies completed the two-day trip with qualifying standards and personal improvements across the lineup.
