GILLETTE, Wyo. - Newcastle finished the Gillette Tournament with three victories in five matches, closing the two-day event with consecutive wins Sept. 5. The Dogies opened with a 2-0 loss to Spearfish before defeating Glenrock 2-0 and falling to Sheridan 2-1 on Sept. 4. Newcastle returned the next day to outlast Riverton 2-1, fell to Spearfish 0-2, and then swept Rapid City Christian 2-0 in the 3rd place game.
Newcastle’s defense kept the opening match against Spearfish competitive, producing 57 digs over two sets. Adalyn Olson led the Dogies with 13 digs and shared the team lead with Delainey Dresen at three kills apiece. Kyndal Von Eye distributed seven assists and made 11 digs, while Delainey Dresen contributed nine digs and two total blocks. Zadyn Allen added 10 digs and an ace in the 2-0 setback.
The attack found its rhythm against Glenrock. Newcastle put down 19 kills on 49 attempts, hit .286 and committed only five attack errors in a straight-set victory. Adalyn Olson led the way with seven kills, a .375 hitting percentage and three aces. Delainey Dresen delivered five kills without an attack error, hit .556 and collected a team-high 13 digs. Kyndal Von Eye directed the offense with 16 assists and added three of Newcastle’s nine aces, while Zadyn Allen converted three of four attacks.
Sheridan pushed Newcastle into the tournament’s first three-set match. The Dogies won one set before the Broncs completed a 2-1 victory. Delainey Dresen paced Newcastle with four kills and added an ace, a solo block and seven digs. Z. Zadyn Allen had three kills and a team-high 13 digs, while Kyndal Von Eye supplied nine assists. Newcastle finished with 60 digs and three total blocks, including two block assists apiece from Adalyn Olson and Pederson.
Newcastle responded with a strong performance at the service line and net against Rapid City Christian. The Dogies recorded nine aces and seven total blocks in the 2-0 win. A. Adalyn Olson powered the attack with eight kills on 14 attempts, made no attack errors, hit .571 and served seven aces. Delainey Dresen added three kills, two aces and five total blocks, including three solo blocks. Kyndal Von Eye distributed 10 assists, Zadyn Allen led the defense with 19 digs and Lillie Morrill added 13 digs and three block assists.
The Dogies finished the tournament by beating Riverton 2-1. Lillie Morrill produced a team-high 10 kills, hit .444 and collected 15 digs in the three-set victory. Kyndal Von Eye recorded 18 assists and 11 digs, while Zadyn Allen supplied 15 digs, two aces and two solo blocks. Adalyn Olson added five kills and 14 digs, and Delainey Dresen finished with four kills and 12 digs. Newcastle totaled 23 kills, 83 digs and four blocks in the finale, completing the tournament with three wins and victories in four of its final five sets.
