Newcastle Volleyball Builds Preseason Identity Around Grit, Growth and Trust

Newcastle High School volleyball enters the season focused on grit, steady improvement and trust across all three levels of the program. The varsity and JV teams traveled to Douglas for preseason competition, while the two C teams opened at home. Results varied throughout the first tournament weekend, but the Dogies gained valuable experience, tested new rotations and showed a willingness to compete through difficult stretches.

C-Team 2 started quickly by winning its first two sets against Sheridan B before dropping the rest of its sets against taller, challenging opponents. The players continued fighting for points and made noticeable progress in trusting one another, maintaining their energy and staying composed when momentum shifted. By concentrating on small, attainable point goals instead of the full deficit, the group improved its court coverage and learned to focus on the next play.

C-Team 1 turned three close pool-play losses into a bronze-bracket championship. Each pool set was decided by only three to five points, and the Dogies responded with two wins in bracket play. The group managed a demanding workload, playing two matches with five players and one substitute before finishing the day without a substitute. One player captured the effort simply: “It might be ugly at times, but we got it done.” The performance reflected the program’s emphasis on determination and teamwork.

Both C teams also made progress in court coverage and getting into position to set up an attack. An upperclassman noted how quickly the younger players were absorbing those concepts, an encouraging sign for the program’s developing depth. The early results showed that the C-team players are prepared to work, learn and support one another, even as they continue refining their positioning and offensive organization.

The JV and varsity teams experienced similar growth over two days. On Day 1, the JV lost to Big Horn and split with Wheatland and Scottsbluff. The varsity fell to Big Horn and Wheatland before losing in three to Scottsbluff. Day 2 in Douglas brought stronger results, with the JV defeating Burns and Split competing with wright. The varsity swept Burns in two sets and added a three-set win over Wright. Across the weekend, Newcastle worked to remove pressure, play freely and evaluate several new rotations while learning to dig deep in extended competition.

The Dogies came away encouraged by their growth and looking toward the coming weekend in Gillette as another chance to develop their lineups and on-court trust.
