NEWCASTLE, Wyo. - Newcastle moved the ball into scoring position several times in the first half but came away empty, allowing Torrington to build a three-touchdown halftime lead on the way to a 41-21 victory Friday night at Newcastle High School. The Homecoming loss dropped the Dogies to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the 2A East Conference.
The Dogies drove deep into Trailblazer territory, including a trip into the red zone, but could not turn those opportunities into points. Torrington capitalized at the other end behind a powerful running game. Garrett Hager scored on runs of 1 and 14 yards in the first quarter, and Xavier Sanchez added an 11-yard touchdown run in the second to make it 21-0 at halftime.
Torrington extended its advantage to 28-0 on Drew Kramer’s 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter before Newcastle’s second-half adjustments began producing results. Dane Crabtree connected with freshman tight end Braxton Von Eye for a 16-yard touchdown on 4th and 11, the first of Von Eye’s career. Von Eye led the Dogies in receiving with two catches for 28 yards, and fellow freshman Tanner Lenardson made the first of his three extra points.
Hager answered with a 3-yard touchdown run to restore Torrington’s 28-point lead, but Newcastle continued to find success offensively. Landon Hatheway scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, and then closed the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run after Hager caught a 19-yard scoring pass from James Stienmetz. Newcastle outscored Torrington 21-20 after halftime.
Crabtree led Newcastle with 121 rushing yards on 13 carries and finished with one passing TD. Senior Landon Hatheway added 89 yards on 17 attempts and had two TD's, as the Dogies accumulated 236 rushing yards and 283 total yards. Torrington finished with 407 yards, including 309 on the ground, as Kramer rushed for 143 yards and Hager added 141 rushing yards while accounting for four touchdowns.
Mason Rawhouser again helped lead Newcastle’s defense, anchoring the edge with three solo tackles, five assisted tackles and a tackle for loss. The Dogies will remain home to face Burns at 6 p.m. MDT Friday, Oct. 2.
