Texas A&M–San Antonio holds off late Texarkana surge in RRAC women’s tournament win

ALEXANDRIA, La. — Texas A&M–San Antonio rode efficient shooting and timely free throws to a 71-62 victory over Texas A&M–Texarkana on Saturday in the Red River Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament at Laborde Earles Coliseum.
The Jaguars built a double-digit halftime lead and withstood a late Eagles push that trimmed the margin to 65-62 in the fourth quarter before closing the game on a decisive run. Texas A&M–San Antonio improved to 21-of-44 (47.7 percent) from the field and converted 26-of-30 free throws (86.7 percent), while Texarkana shot 24-of-67 (35.8 percent) and went 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) at the line.
Kierra Sanderlin led the Jaguars with 17 points and nine rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting in 31 minutes, providing a steady interior presence. Evelyn Lorenzo added 16 points and went 10-of-11 at the line while playing all 40 minutes, helping San Antonio repeatedly capitalize on Texarkana fouls in the half court. The Jaguars’ efficiency inside translated to a 36-22 advantage in points in the paint.
San Antonio set the tone early, taking an 18-14 lead after the first quarter and widening the gap with an 18-10 second-quarter edge to go up 36-24 at halftime. Texarkana struggled to match the Jaguars’ shooting touch but stayed afloat with 16 steals and 28 bench points, turning San Antonio’s 29 turnovers into 17 points off turnovers.
Texarkana made its strongest push in the second half. The Eagles outscored the Jaguars 17-13 in the third quarter to pull within 49-41 and continued to chip away in the fourth, ultimately drawing as close as 65-62. San Antonio answered at the line and on the defensive end, finishing the quarter with a 22-21 scoring edge to preserve the nine-point final margin.
Breyionce George paced Texarkana with 14 points and six rebounds on 6-of-11 shooting in 22 minutes. Chi’onne Dailey added 12 points and two assists, while Imani Rothschild contributed a versatile line of nine points, six rebounds and seven assists in 32 minutes. Despite the Eagles’ activity on the perimeter and 23 forced fouls, they were unable to overcome the shooting disparity and San Antonio’s 7-1 edge in blocked shots.
Texas A&M–San Antonio also held a 32-29 rebounding advantage, including a 25-15 edge on the defensive glass that limited Texarkana’s second-chance opportunities. The game was officiated by Patrick Keohane, Brent McKormick and Matthew Krenrek; attendance was listed as 0 on the box score.
