Valley Forge advances four wrestlers out of OHSAA Sectional Tournament
Valley Forge High School’s Patriots men’s wrestling program turned in a productive day at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament in Maple Heights, qualifying four wrestlers to the Wadsworth District Tournament and placing one more as an alternate.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Nathan Hale, who battled his way to a 2nd-place finish at his weight class. Hale advanced through the bracket and reached the championship bout, securing valuable team points and positioning himself as one of Valley Forge’s top contenders heading into the district round.
Valley Forge also received important performances from Amir Abukhalil and Maksym Petrechko, who each finished 3rd in their respective weight classes. Both wrestlers responded after semifinal setbacks to win key consolation matches and lock up automatic berths to Wadsworth. Their ability to regroup in the placement rounds helped solidify the Patriots’ overall showing at the sectional.
Gaige Burianek added a 4th-place finish, giving the Patriots a fourth automatic qualifier moving on to the district tournament. Burianek’s effort in the lower placement matches extended Valley Forge’s advancement total and provided additional depth to the team’s postseason lineup.
Rounding out the Patriots’ notable performances, Gabe Wright claimed 5th place to earn the tournament’s alternate spot at his weight. While just outside the group of automatic qualifiers, Wright remains in contention for a district appearance should an opening arise, reflecting the overall competitiveness of Valley Forge’s roster at the sectional.
With four wrestlers officially advancing and one alternate in position, Valley Forge shifts its focus to the Wadsworth District Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Patriots will look to build on their sectional success as Hale, Abukhalil, Petrechko and Burianek aim to extend their postseason runs and contend for berths in the next stage of the OHSAA tournament series.
