MIDLAND, Mich. – Warrior Men’s Basketball came up just short on the road at Northwood on Thursday night at Bennett Sports Center, falling in a tightly contested matchup decided in the closing minutes. Northwood used a late fourth-quarter surge to create just enough separation, handing Wayne State a narrow setback in early-season nonconference action.

The teams traded baskets for much of the first half, with Wayne State’s defensive pressure on the perimeter setting the tone. Guards JaKobie Boose and Jordan Briggs helped the Warriors establish early rhythm, pushing the pace in transition and probing Northwood’s man-to-man defense. Forward Marcus Bentley provided a physical presence in the paint, sealing for deep post touches and keeping possessions alive on the offensive glass as the Warriors stayed within a single possession for extended stretches.

Northwood responded with a perimeter-driven attack, knocking down timely 3-pointers to answer nearly every Wayne State run. The Warriors’ half-court defense tightened in the second quarter, limiting clean looks and forcing multiple late-clock heaves, but a brief scoring drought before halftime allowed the Timberwolves to take a slim lead into the break. Wayne State’s frontcourt, led by Bentley and fellow forward Avery Lewis, continued to battle on the boards to prevent Northwood from pulling away.

Wayne State made its strongest push coming out of halftime, stringing together stops to spark a key run in the third quarter. Guards Cortez Jackson and Justice Gordon applied ball pressure at the top of the defense, generating deflections and live-ball turnovers that turned into transition opportunities. A pair of drives to the rim by Carlos Paul III, along with inside touches for center Matt Coffey, helped the Warriors briefly grab the momentum and cut into Northwood’s advantage.

The game swung for good in the fourth quarter, when Northwood answered Wayne State’s surge with a decisive run of its own. The Timberwolves converted on consecutive trips from beyond the arc and capitalized on a few empty Warrior possessions to push the margin to a two-possession game. Despite continued efforts from the Wayne State backcourt to attack downhill and get to the rim, Northwood’s late-game rebounding and clock management allowed the hosts to close out the win.

Wayne State’s depth remained a positive sign, with multiple guards and forwards logging meaningful minutes and contributing on both ends of the floor. The Warriors mixed lineups effectively, using their length on the perimeter and size inside to contest shots and control stretches of the game defensively. Though the final result favored Northwood, the Warriors showed competitive balance across all four quarters and continued to build cohesion heading into the remainder of the December slate.

Warrior Men’s Basketball will return to action following the holiday break as GLIAC play resumes, with the lessons from Thursday’s road contest at Northwood expected to carry forward into conference competition.
