York (Pa.) Dominates Fitchburg State 98-45 Behind Hocker’s 35-Point, 21-Rebound Effort

York (Pa.) used a decisive third-quarter surge and a dominant performance on the glass to pull away from Fitchburg State for a 98-45 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Florida Sunshine Shootout at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Spartans turned a 12-point halftime lead into a runaway win behind a massive 28-4 advantage in the third quarter, sparked by the inside-out play of Alyssa Hocker and the perimeter scoring of Breana Grim.

York established control early and never trailed after Grim knocked down a 3-pointer at the 9:01 mark of the first quarter to make it 3-2. Hocker followed with a layup off an offensive rebound at 8:22 for a 5-2 edge as York set the tone with its work on the boards. A late layup by Taylor Brenneman in the closing seconds of the opening frame pushed the margin to 25-14 after one quarter.

Fitchburg State produced its best stretch in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to single digits before York responded. Hocker buried a 3-pointer at 5:37 of the period to extend the lead to 37-31, and Brenneman added a jumper in the paint at 3:22 for a 41-31 advantage. York carried that momentum into halftime up 48-34, setting the stage for a dominant second half.

The third quarter proved decisive. Hocker opened a game-breaking run with another 3-pointer at the 7:44 mark to make it 55-36, and York’s pressure defense took over from there. The Spartans limited Fitchburg State to just four points in the quarter while repeatedly turning stops into transition chances. A layup by Grim in transition, assisted by Lauren Linebaugh, stretched the lead to 74-38 with 2:29 left in the third as York effectively put the game out of reach.

York’s depth carried the effort through the fourth quarter, with reserves contributing to close out the win. Taylor Burda connected on a 3-pointer at 3:42 of the final quarter to push the score to 90-45, and Keira Pombar capped the scoring with a late jumper for the final 98-45 margin. York finished 39-of-95 from the field (41.1%) and dominated the backboards with a 70-39 rebounding edge, including 32 offensive rebounds that repeatedly extended possessions.

Hocker led all players with 35 points and 21 rebounds on 14-of-26 shooting, adding six steals and two assists in a complete two-way performance. Grim provided a strong complement on the perimeter with 24 points, going 8-of-19 from the floor and 3-of-9 from 3-point range, while knocking down 5-of-6 free throws. Morgan Adams added 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and Brenneman chipped in eight points and six assists while shooting 4-of-7.

Fitchburg State struggled to match York’s size and tempo, shooting 17-of-69 (24.6%) from the field and committing 26 turnovers against York’s active defense. The Falcons were 7-of-21 from beyond the arc and finished 4-of-8 at the line. Rylie Harlow was a bright spot with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, along with four rebounds, but Fitchburg State managed only 11 total points after halftime.

York complemented its rebounding dominance with strong all-around team numbers, recording 24 assists on 39 made field goals, 16 steals and seven blocks while committing just nine turnovers. The performance at the Florida Sunshine Shootout underscored York’s ability to control games with interior strength and defensive pressure as the Spartans continued their nonconference slate in Daytona Beach.
