DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — York (Pa.) broke open a competitive game with a suffocating third-quarter surge, outscoring Fitchburg State 28-4 coming out of halftime to pull away for a 98-45 victory Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Center.
Holding a 48-34 lead at the break, York turned the game decisively in the third quarter behind relentless defense and control of the glass. The Spartans limited Fitchburg State to just four points in the frame while repeatedly converting second-chance opportunities, stretching the margin to 76-38 entering the fourth quarter and removing any doubt about the outcome.
Forward Alyssa Hocker powered York with a monster double-double, piling up 35 points and 21 rebounds, including 13 on the offensive end. She shot 14-for-26 from the field, hit 2-of-6 from beyond the arc and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw line, while adding six steals and two assists. Hocker helped set the tone early with a layup in the first quarter to make it 19-9 and later drilled a 3-pointer at the 5:37 mark of the second quarter to push the lead to 37-31 as York began to create separation.
York led 25-14 after the first quarter and 48-34 at halftime, but it was the decisive third quarter that defined the game. Hocker sparked the surge with another 3-pointer at 7:44 of the third to make it 55-36, then finished a fast-break layup just over a minute later for a 60-36 cushion. Guard Breana Grim added a driving layup with 2:55 left in the quarter to push the advantage to 72-38, capping a dominant stretch in which Fitchburg State struggled to generate clean looks.
Grim finished with 24 points on 8-for-19 shooting, including three 3-pointers, and went 5-for-6 at the line. Morgan Adams provided interior balance with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while Taylor Brenneman chipped in eight points, six assists and three steals, including a layup to close the first quarter for a 25-14 York lead and a midrange jumper late in the second to extend the margin to 41-31.
As a team, York shot 39-for-95 from the floor (41.1 percent), going 6-for-25 from 3-point range and 14-for-17 (82.4 percent) at the free-throw line. York dominated the glass with a 70-39 rebounding advantage, including 32 offensive boards, and used that edge along with 16 steals to generate consistent transition opportunities. The Spartans also moved the ball effectively, recording 24 assists while committing only nine turnovers.
Fitchburg State was led by Rylie Harlow, who scored 17 points on 7-for-14 shooting and 3-for-5 from 3-point distance, including a 3-pointer early in the second quarter that trimmed the deficit to 25-17 and another in the fourth to make it 76-43. However, the Falcons shot just 24.6 percent from the field (17-for-69), 33.3 percent from 3-point range (7-for-21) and 50.0 percent at the line (4-for-8) while turning the ball over 26 times against York’s pressure.
York closed out the win with balanced scoring in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Taylor Burda to push the lead to 90-45 and a late jumper from Keira Pombar to cap the scoring at 98-45. The performance, built on rebounding dominance and a overwhelming third-quarter run, underscored York’s ability to impose its style on both ends of the floor heading into the remainder of the season.
