York Pulls Away From Fitchburg State 98-45 With Dominant Third Quarter

Daytona Beach, Fla. - York (Pa.) used a turnover-driven 28-4 third quarter to pull away from Fitchburg State for a 98-45 victory Dec. 28 at the Florida Sunshine Shootout. York led by only three points midway through the second quarter before closing the half on a 14-3 stretch and overwhelming Fitchburg after the break at the Ocean Center.

Fitchburg took its only lead when Kaelynn Tanner opened the scoring with a basket, but Breana Grim answered with a 3-pointer that put York ahead 3-2 with 9:01 left in the first quarter. York extended the margin to 23-9 on two free throws by Alyssa Hocker. Morgan Genness cut the deficit to nine with a 3-pointer, and Taylor Brenneman scored the final basket of the quarter to send York into the second with a 25-14 advantage.

Fitchburg erased most of a 14-point deficit during its strongest stretch of the game. Kaelynn Tanner capped the rally with a 3-pointer at the 6:16 mark, trimming York’s lead to 34-31. Alyssa Hocker responded 39 seconds later with a 3-pointer, starting York’s decisive answer. Shealyn Ricks converted a second-chance opportunity as the run reached 10-0, and Alyssa Hocker scored the final points of the half to give York a 48-34 lead.

York turned the game into a rout in the third quarter, collecting nine steals and scoring 14 points off turnovers. Alyssa Hocker scored early in the half, completed a three-point play and later turned a takeaway into a fast-break basket for a 64-36 lead. Makenna Zimmerman added a second-chance basket as the margin reached 38 points, and York carried a 76-38 advantage into the fourth.

Rylie Harlow completed a 7-0 Fitchburg run to begin the final quarter, but Alyssa Hocker answered with a basket at 7:20. Breana Grim added a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 83-45, and Keira Pombar scored the game’s final points with 20 seconds remaining to produce the largest margin. York held Fitchburg scoreless after its opening fourth-quarter run.

Alyssa Hocker led York with 35 points, 21 rebounds, including 13 offensive boards, and six steals while shooting 14 of 26 from the field and 5 of 5 at the free-throw line. Breana Grim scored 24 points, Morgan Adams contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and Taylor Brenneman had eight points, six assists and three steals. Rylie Harlow paced Fitchburg with 17 points, while Kaelynn Tanner finished with 10.

York finished with a 70-39 rebounding advantage, including 32 offensive rebounds, and scored 31 second-chance points. York also forced 26 turnovers, committed only nine and held a 54-16 edge in paint scoring. Fitchburg shot 24.6% from the field, while York recorded 24 assists on 39 made baskets and closed the neutral-site win with a 22-7 fourth quarter.
