HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. - Kevin Cohen’s 6-yard touchdown run with 10:58 left in the fourth quarter put Adrienne C. Nelson Hawks ahead for good in a 20-19 home victory over Central Catholic Hawks on Friday, Oct. 16. The matchup paired two of the top teams in the Mt. Hood Conference.
The Hawks scored through the air in the second quarter when Braylon Gaines connected with Malachi Garlington for an 8-yard touchdown with 6:45 remaining. That passing score complemented a ground attack that produced 200 yards between the team’s two featured running backs.
Cohen supplied both of Nelson’s second-half touchdowns. His 22-yard scoring run with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter helped tie the game at 13-13, setting up the go-ahead score early in the fourth.
Jalen Crichton led Nelson’s rushing effort with 109 yards on 16 carries, averaging nearly 7 yards per attempt. Cohen added 91 yards and two touchdowns on another 16 carries. Together, the pair gave the Hawks an evenly shared rushing workload, with Cohen delivering the scoring runs after halftime.
On defense, linebacker Drew Newbury led the Hawks with seven tackles. Defensive back Justin Powell contributed two pass breakups, adding a pair of disruptions in coverage to Nelson’s defensive effort in the one-point conference win.
