Hawks Face Top-Seeded Jesuit With State Quarterfinal Berth at Stake

Thomas Simien | Adrienne C. Nelson High School | Oct 31, 2026

No. 16 seed Adrienne C. Nelson High (20-8) faces No. 1 seed Jesuit High (22-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Jesuit in the second round of the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) volleyball playoffs. The winner advances to the state quarterfinals.

The Hawks enter after a five-set victory over Sherwood, completing a reverse sweep by winning three consecutive sets after falling behind 2-0.

Outside hitter Avery Law delivered an exceptional all-around performance against Sherwood, handling serve receive and turning out-of-system balls into kills while also serving well. Her ability to generate offense without an ideal setup gives the Hawks an attacking option when their first contact takes them out of their preferred rhythm.

Outside hitter Hazel Neal and outside hitter/defensive specialist Arabel Miller provide additional strengths. Hazel used precise placement to find kills across the court against Sherwood and also contributed strong defense at the net. Miller excelled defensively and in serve receive while finding open spots on the opposing court. Their placement presents a complementary attacking approach: locating available space rather than relying on power alone.

Nelson’s path to the next round runs through a Jesuit team with 22 wins and four losses. The advancing team will play in the OSAA state quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Forest Grove High.
