A late second-half goal from freshman forward G. Romero provided a bright spot for Armijo High School, but the Royals Women’s Soccer team fell 3-1 to West Campus on Tuesday night in Fairfield.

West Campus controlled the early portions of the match, capitalizing on defensive miscues to build a multi-goal lead before halftime. The visitors struck first on a through ball that split the back line, then doubled the advantage later in the opening half with a low shot driven inside the far post to put the Royals under pressure heading into the break.

Armijo settled in defensively as the match wore on, tightening shape and limiting clear chances after the interval. The back line and midfield worked to close gaps and deny service, forcing West Campus to rely more on counterattacks and long-range efforts in the second half. Despite the improved organization, West Campus added a third goal after the break to make it 3-0 and create a difficult margin for the Royals to overcome.

The Royals found their response late in the second half through Romero, who provided the hosts’ breakthrough. The freshman, wearing No. 7, broke into space and finished clinically to put Armijo on the board, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Her goal energized the side and highlighted the team’s persistence in continuing to push forward despite the scoreline.

Armijo generated more attacking pressure in the closing minutes, pressing higher and looking to find Romero and the wide players in advanced areas. The Royals created half-chances and forced the West Campus defense to clear danger multiple times, but could not find a second goal before the final whistle.

Romero’s performance stood out as a key positive for the Royals, particularly her composure in front of goal as a freshman in a varsity match. With the league schedule continuing, Armijo will look to build on the improved second-half organization and attacking spark shown late against West Campus as the team moves deeper into its conference slate.
