7th Grade T-Bird Football: Recap of Wet Contest Against Sparta Spartans

Kevin Catterson | Baraboo | Oct 15, 2025

The 7th Grade Jack Young Middle School Football Team faced off against the Sparta Spartans from Meadowview Middle School on October 14, 2025, in a regular season contest at Flambeau Field in Beryl Newman Stadium, Baraboo, Wisconsin. This was the fifth game of the season for the Thunderbirds. The game unfolded under challenging weather conditions, with consistent rain impacting play, leading to a wet ball and slippery cleats. Despite the wet ball, Baraboo never fumbled any snaps or threw any interceptions. From the onset, the Spartans showed formidable speed and strategic plays, scoring two quick touchdowns in the first quarter without a response from the Thunderbirds, leading to a halftime score of 16-0 in favor of Sparta. Sparta’s innovative strategies, including the use of an offensive lineman in a running back role, contributed significantly to their scoring. In the second half, the Thunderbirds adjusted their strategy and managed to slow down Sparta's speed while also trading scores. Key passes by Owen Basinski to teammates such as wing back Will Brinker, tight end Evan Green, and full back AJ Carney highlighted Baraboo's offense. Basinski held tough at QB surviving a number of big hits from Sparta's defense. Baraboo scored their lone touchdown when fullback AJ Carney spectacularly took an 82-yard run to the end zone along the right sideline. Mac Bavlnka added a two-point conversion for the Thunderbirds. Despite these efforts, the Thunderbirds ultimately fell to the Spartans with a final score of 24-8. The Thunderbirds showcased notable defensive performances, particularly from Ryland Johnsen, who led the team in tackles and demonstrated excellent technique. Defensive back Jack Wagner recovered a Sparta fumble in the second half that was caused by defensive back Carson Reynolds on a well timed punch out of the ball. Looking forward, the Thunderbirds aim to improve their current season record of 2-3 (wins vs. Holmen & Tomah (Scrimmage)). Their next game is scheduled against La Crosse Logan Middle School on October 20, 2025, at Flambeau Field in Beryl Newman Stadium. As they prepare, the team will undoubtedly focus on strengthening their strategies and team coordination.
