7th Grade T-Birds Clinch Victory in Thrilling Football Encounter Against Holmen Vikings
In an eagerly anticipated regular season contest, the 7th Grade Jack Young Middle School Football team successfully defended their home turf at Flambeau Field in Beryl Newman Stadium against the Holmen Vikings. The game, played on September 30, 2025, ended with a final score of Baraboo 16, Holmen 8. The game began under a clear starry sky under the stadium lights, setting a perfect backdrop for this intense matchup. Holmen initially took the lead with an 8-0 score in the second quarter. However, a pivotal moment occurred shortly before halftime when a Holmen turnover allowed Baraboo to strike back. With just 15 seconds left in the half, quarterback Owen Basinski connected with fullback AJ Carney for a touchdown on a beautifully executed play-action pass. The two-point conversion toss play around right end succeeded, tying the game at 8-8. The second half saw Baraboo's defense, coordinated by Coach Joe Bavlnka, brick by brick strengthening their position by forcing turnovers, including a fumble recovery. On offense, the Thunderbirds continued to smash through with key plays. In the final quarter, Basinski and Carney paired up once more for a significant touchdown from midfield, securing the lead with another successful two-point dive play by bruising fullback Mac Bavlnka. Baraboo won the turnover battle, forcing two turnovers and not committing any. Additional defensive highlights included Tim Harjung's acrobatic interception and multiple sacks contributed by the Baraboo defense led by Treyton Bourne's multiple tackles from the linebacker position. Defensive linemen Abel Decorah played well too. Ryker Selje and Mathew Mrgan never flinched! Defensive Back Ryland Johnsen led the team in multiple pass break-ups! The offense was bolstered by robust runs from Mac Bavlnka, Carson Reynolds, Will Brinker, Jake Puttkamer, Jack Wagner and Landon Meier; multiple other consistent contributions across the board, with Justin Atkinson playing every offensive snap at left tackle. The victory not only marked Baraboo's first win of the season but also their first ever in youth tackle football, improving their record to 1-1. Looking ahead, the Thunderbirds are set to face the Onalaska Hilltoppers 7th Grade Team on October 7, 2025, at Onalaska Middle School. The team hopes to carry the momentum from this victory into their next game.
