8th Grade T-Bird Football Triumphs in Rainy Football Contest against Sparta Spartans

Kevin Catterson | Baraboo | Oct 20, 2025

The 8th Grade Jack Young Middle School Football Team from Baraboo, known as the Thunderbirds, secured a decisive victory over the Sparta Spartans on October 14, 2025, in Sparta, Wisconsin. The Thunderbirds handled the wet and rainy conditions brilliantly, culminating in a resounding 42-6 win. This victory marks their second consecutive win against Sparta and their first victory since the season opener against Tomah. The game took place at Meadowview Middle School and faced steady rain, particularly during the second half, contributing to a challenging playing environment. From the outset, Baraboo displayed aggressive and strategic gameplay. Wingback Grayson Stenberg highlighted the offensive effort with two touchdown runs totaling 65 yards in the first half alone, including a spectacular score on the second play from scrimmage. Additional contributions came from LJ Martin and Nixon Thola, who also navigated the sodden field to add points through hard running and successful two-point conversions. In the third quarter, Odin Alexander's long touchdown run further extended their lead, while the offensive line, led by Cole Perkins, Jacob Lucido, Lucas Waldon, Jayovanni Kufner, and Josiah Womack and their team, progressively weakened Sparta's defense. Noteworthy was Baraboo's ability to maintain possession without any fumbles or dropped snaps. This flawless execution played a critical role, coupled with their robust defensive line which stifled Sparta's run game and forced them into a risky aerial attack late in the game. Late in the 4th quarter after Sparta scored on a long pass play, running back Myles Motz took the ensuing kick-off to the house on a beautifully ran kick return that injected some major excitement into the Thunderbird contingent while leaving Sparta dragging their cleats. Sparta fumbled the ball on multiple possessions and every player for Baraboo gave their best effort behind the leadership of coaches Jerry Waldon, Josh Schultz, Justin Riley and Doug Thola. The next challenge for the Thunderbirds is set for October 21, 2025, against the La Crosse Logan Rangers at La Crosse Logan Middle School. This upcoming game will be a critical opportunity for Baraboo to improve their current season record of 2-3. With the momentum from their comprehensive win against Sparta, the Thunderbirds look forward to maintaining their competitive edge in the season finale!
