MADISON, Wis. — Baraboo used strong balance beam and floor lineups to earn a tight varsity victory and a runaway junior varsity win over Monona Grove in a conference dual Friday at Madison Turners.
The Thunderbirds posted a 128.15 in the varsity meet to slip past Monona Grove’s 126.35, with Baraboo’s Zeva Valley leading the way on beam with a meet-best 9.20 and adding an 8.55 on floor. Monona Grove’s Kennedy Sefcik claimed the top all-around score at 34.85, highlighted by a 9.05 on vault and 8.60 on bars, but Baraboo’s depth across the four events was enough to secure the road win.
Baraboo did its best work on beam and floor in varsity, outscoring Monona Grove 32.95–32.25 on beam and 32.675–30.275 on floor. Valley’s 9.20 was the highest beam score of the night and a key piece of the Thunderbirds’ event total, while teammates Hadley Porter and Taytum Poker each added an 8.25 to keep Baraboo in front. On floor, Valley’s 8.55 and Porter’s 8.35 anchored a lineup that ultimately provided the margin Baraboo needed.
Monona Grove countered with an edge on vault and bars, putting up a 33.775 on vault to Baraboo’s 33.075 and a 30.05 on bars to Baraboo’s 29.45. Sefcik led the Silver Eagles on both events, scoring a 9.05 on vault and 8.60 on bars on the way to her 34.85 all-around. Baraboo stayed close with solid all-around efforts from Valley, who finished with a 33.75, and Porter at 32.40, allowing the Thunderbirds to capitalize once the meet moved to beam and floor.
In junior varsity action, Baraboo dominated from start to finish, recording a 114.90 team total to Monona Grove’s 55.10. The Thunderbirds outscored Monona Grove on every apparatus, led by a 31.30 on vault, 26.10 on bars, 29.20 on beam and 28.30 on floor. Taytum Poker delivered the top JV vault with an 8.00, while Lacey Bender paced bars with a 7.20.
Baraboo’s JV beam and floor lineups continued the momentum. Charlotte Bavlnka matched Poker’s vault mark with an 8.00 on beam for the highest JV score on that event, and Julia Laux led the Thunderbirds on floor with a 7.65.
With the conference victory, the Thunderbirds collected both a narrow varsity win and a decisive JV result, showcasing strong all-around performances and especially steady work on beam and floor as the season moves deeper into the winter schedule.
