Baraboo High School Track and Field: Coach Turkington Inspires Thunder Throwers with Motivational Speech
In a unique, motivational event held at the Baraboo High School Auxiliary Gym, the members of the Baraboo High School shot put and discus throwers were treated to an inspiring speech by Head Football Coach Steve Turkington during their spring break practice. The event, tailored towards both boys and girls of the JV and Varsity track teams, managed to lift spirits and solidify the team's commitment under the theme 'F.A.M.I.L.Y.' (Forget About Me I Love You). The highlight of the event was a rock-paper-scissors tournament led by Coach Turkington, which served as more than just a game; it was a lesson in mutual support and happiness for each other's successes. Coach used this fun competition to emphasize the importance of dropping personal egos for the benefit of the team, a message that resonated well with the young athletes. His focus was on the importance of helping others, which he pointed out not only aids in personal performance but also relieves pressure, allowing players to stay present and focused. The speech concluded on a powerful note as Coach Turkington urged the team to be 'United In Purpose.' He stressed the shared goal of excelling as a leading group of throwers both in their conference and at each meet, which can be achieved by putting team goals and respect for each other at the forefront. By embracing these values, the Thunderbirds are set to enhance their cohesion and overall performance, truly embodying the spirit of 'F.A.M.I.L.Y.' The inspiring words provided the perfect backdrop for this profound team-building experience, ensuring that every participant came out as a winner, fortified with lessons that extend well beyond the playing field.
