Baraboo stayed within a goal through the opening half Thursday night, but Sauk Prairie broke the match open after halftime and handed the Thunderbirds a 3-0 loss at Baraboo High School.

The decisive stretch came in the second half, when Sauk Prairie added two goals after taking a 1-0 lead into the break. Even with both teams shorthanded, Baraboo kept the match tight for much of the evening. The Thunderbirds were missing several key players, and Sauk Prairie also entered the match without a number of players because of a dance recital.

Baraboo's strongest work came on the defensive end in the first half. The Thunderbirds played solid defense and limited quality chances well enough to keep the visitors from building on the early advantage. That effort gave Baraboo a chance to stay within striking distance despite being short-handed and still looking for an equalizer.

Sauk Prairie eventually found more space in the second half and converted twice to extend the margin to three goals. Baraboo was unable to answer offensively and finished the night scoreless, but the Thunderbirds' ability to hold the line for the first 40 minutes was one of the clearest takeaways from the match.

With limited roster availability affecting both sides, the match turned on depth and second-half finishing. For Baraboo, the opening-half defensive effort offered a foundation to build on as the Thunderbirds move forward in the season.
