Baraboo opens Badger Large play with third-place finish at The Oaks

Baraboo announced itself quickly in its first Badger Large Conference event, posting a season-best team score of 314 to finish third Thursday at The Oaks in Cottage Grove.
The Thunderbirds, who moved up from the Badger Small Conference this season, entered the meet looking to measure themselves against established programs such as Waunakee, Oregon, DeForest, Milton, Monona Grove, Watertown and Beaver Dam. On a course familiar to Baraboo from its annual invitational schedule, the Thunderbirds delivered a steady opening statement in league play on what was described as a perfect day for golf.
Junior Jack Brinker and senior Jon Moon led the way for Baraboo, each carding a 77 to tie for ninth individually. Both turned in similar rounds, striking the ball well but leaving strokes on the greens when putts just weren't falling. Even so, their matching scores gave the Thunderbirds two top-10 finishes and set the tone for the team total.
Sophomore Peyton Olson recovered from a slow start and settled in for a 79, giving Baraboo a third solid counting score. Sophomores Cooper Jauch and Finnley Schindler each added an 81 as the Thunderbirds rounded out a balanced lineup. The result was Baraboo's lowest team score of the season, an encouraging sign early in conference competition.
While the players were not fully satisfied with their individual rounds, the overall result showed Baraboo can contend in its new conference. A 314 in the first Badger Large meet provided a strong benchmark and reinforced that the Thunderbirds expect to be part of the race as conference play continues.
