Baraboo turned in a team score of 320 to finish second Saturday at the Sparta Invitational, a strong early measuring stick for a group that will see several of the same teams again at regional competition later this spring. The Thunderbirds were led by sophomore Cooper Jauch, who shot a 78 and tied for sixth individually at River Run Golf Course in Sparta.

The 16-team event included six programs that are set to compete in Baraboo’s regional next month, also scheduled for River Run, making the round especially valuable beyond the final standings. Baraboo finished just behind Onalaska, and the result gave the Thunderbirds a useful look at where they stack up on a course that will carry added importance at the end of the season.

Jauch produced Baraboo’s best round by striking the ball well throughout the day, particularly with his irons. That approach play helped create repeated birdie chances as he hit greens in regulation and stayed near the top of the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Peyton Olson followed with an 80, good for a tie for 11th, continuing a steady stretch built on solid ball-striking and the work he has put into keeping his scoring average low.

This is a special tournament for me to bring the players to because it is my home course from when I grew up and is a memorial tournament for my high school golf coach Singh Grewal.

Junior Jack Brinker recovered from a slow start over his opening holes and responded with a resilient round of 81. Sophomore Finnley Schindler also carded an 81, playing a mostly steady round while leaving a few shots on the course he likely would want back. Senior Silas Morehouse completed Baraboo’s scoring with a 98.

Conditions added to the quality of play. The course was in strong shape after a week of rain and warm temperatures produced fresh spring growth, and the setup reflected what teams often hope for in late April. The weather was fantastic with sunshine and minimal wind and a great day to be on the course.

For Baraboo, the finish offered both encouragement and perspective. A second-place team result against a field with regional significance underscored the Thunderbirds’ depth, and the round also served as a reminder of how quickly scores can tighten when every stroke matters. With Jauch and Olson leading the way and two more counting scores at 81, Baraboo left Sparta with a competitive result and another important look at the course it will revisit in the postseason.
