In the final regular season hockey game of the season at Pierce Park on Saturday, the Baraboo High School Thunderbirds faced a formidable opponent in the Onalaska/La Crosse Hilltoppers, ultimately falling with a final score of 6-3. The game started unfavorably for Baraboo as they trailed 1-0 after the first period and the deficit widened to 3-0 by the end of the second. However, the Thunderbirds showcased their resilience in the final period. Jordi Beale ignited hope by scoring the first goal for Baraboo, followed by goals from Colin Mattson and Bobby Meeker. These efforts highlighted the team’s determination, but Onalaska/La Crosse maintained their advantage, with Lukas Suchan scoring the game-winning goal. Baraboo's Josiah Fanning stood between the pipes, facing 45 shots throughout the contest. Players like Nathan Gneiser, Bobby Meeker, Jordi Beale, Thomas Sarnow, and Wyatt Arnold contributed with crucial assists. Despite the loss, these key moments, including Beale's and Meeker's late-game scores, demonstrated the Thunderbirds' "Never Say Die" attitude. Looking ahead, Baraboo is slated to face the Middleton Cardinals at Capitol Ice Arena on February 18 in a WIAA Regional contest. The Thunderbirds, currently holding a season record of 5-19, are looking to keep the season alive for the seven seniors on the roster.
