REEDSBURG, Wis. — Baraboo used balanced scoring across all four events to place third at the WIAA Division 2 sectional meet Friday night in Reedsburg, securing three individual qualifiers to the state meet.
The Thunderbirds posted a 131.75 team total to finish behind team champion Galesville Co-Op (133.375) and runner-up Sparta (133.325) in a tightly packed top three. Baraboo’s score came on the strength of a 34.225 on floor, a 33.15 on beam, a 33.375 on vault and a 31.00 on bars in a field that featured eight teams and 74 athletes.
Individually, Baraboo was led by all-arounders Zeva Valley and Hadley Porter, who both punched tickets to the state meet. Valley scored a 34.125 in the all-around, highlighted by a 9.100 on floor, an 8.600 on beam, an 8.225 on bars and an 8.200 on vault. Porter followed closely with a 33.850 all-around, powered by an 8.850 on floor, 8.500 on both beam and vault, and an 8.000 on bars. Both Valley and Porter advanced to state in the all-around, with Valley also qualifying on beam and floor and Porter qualifying on floor.
Baraboo also added another state qualifier on beam, as Taytum Poker earned a spot at state on that event. Poker’s performance contributed to the Thunderbirds’ 33.15 team total on beam, which ranked second among the top three teams and helped solidify Baraboo’s hold on third place. Beam and floor collectively were Baraboo’s strongest events, accounting for more than half of the team’s overall total.
On floor, Baraboo’s 34.225 was one of the top event scores of the night, keeping the Thunderbirds within reach of the leaders. Galesville Co-Op edged Sparta for the team title by just 0.05, 133.375–133.325, while Onalaska Co-Op finished just behind Baraboo in fourth at 131.325, underscoring how narrow the margins were across the top four teams.
Baraboo’s third-place team finish and three individual state qualifiers — Poker on beam, Porter on floor and in the all-around, and Valley on beam, floor and in the all-around — cap a strong sectional showing for the Thunderbirds. The qualifiers now turn their attention to the state meet, where Baraboo will be represented across multiple events and the all-around competition in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, March 7th.
