Scanlan & Olson Advance to State After Success at Subsectional and Sectional Tournaments

The Baraboo Girls' Tennis team competed bravely in the recent Subsectional and Sectional tournaments held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. The team showcased commendable performances, notably advancing one of their doubles teams to higher stages of competition, although facing tough matches in the singles category. At the Subsectional tournament, standout singles player Michelle Barahona, competing in the #4 slot, achieved a challenging win against her first opponent from Sun Prairie East with scores of 5-7, 6-0, 1-0(4). Despite her initial victory, she was halted in the second round by the top-seeded player from Madison West. Other singles players, namely Kierzek, Heiner, and Atwater, experienced setbacks, dropping their opening matches, unable to progress to Sectionals. The doubles matches featured memorable performances, particularly the #1 doubles team comprised of Willa Scanlan and Mallory Olson. This formidable pair triumphed over Sun Prairie West with a score of 6-4, 6-3 at the Subsectional level, securing their advance to the Sectional tournaments. Their momentum continued as they conquered Onalaska with a striking 6-0, 7-5, overcoming an initial deficit of 2-5 in the second set. Although they ultimately placed fourth after losses to Middleton and Sun Prairie East, their achievement in qualifying for the state tournament was a significant accomplishment for the Thunderbirds. The #2 & #3 doubles teams consisting of Jauch/Puttkamer & Ruefer/Mann faced challenging matches out of the gate and were unable to advance into round 2 at Subsectionals. Looking ahead, Willa and Mallory are set to compete in the 2025 WIAA State Tennis Tournament on October 23rd-25th 2025, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
